Q1.  What is an Employer Identification Number? 

 

A1.  According to the IRS (from www.irs.gov)  

An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a nine-digit number that the IRS assigns to business entities. The IRS uses this number to identify taxpayers required to file various business tax returns. EINs are used by employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, non-profit organizations, trusts and estates, government agencies, certain individuals and other business entities. 

 

Q2.  Is the public charter school required to obtain an EIN? 

 

A2. Yes.  ANY employer that pays employees is required to obtain an EIN from the IRS. 

 

Q3.  How does the public charter school obtain an EIN? 

 

A3.  Any employer seeking to obtain an EIN must complete the IRS form SS-4.  The form and instructions are available for download at the IRS website.  A link to the form and instructions is provided here.  

 

Q4.  What information is needed to complete Form SS-4? 

 

A4.  To complete the SS-4, you will need basic information about your public charter school, including:

  • Address

  • Name and SSN of a principal officer or trustee

  • Date you paid or will pay first wages

  • Closing month of your accounting year

  • The highest number of employees you expect to have in the next year

 

Q5.  What are the options for filing the SS-4 once it has been completed? 

 

A5.  You may submit Form SS-4 in any of the following ways: 

1.  On-line. Choosing this option will provide you with a provisional EIN (pending final review) that you can use immediately.

2.  Over the telephone by calling the Business & Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933 between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM.
