CHARTER SCHOOL FUNDING BILL FOR 2008-2009
PASSES THE SENATE ON A VOICE VOTE

House Bill 1642 passed the Senate on a voice vote this morning, May 1st. The bill was introduced on the Senate floor by Senator Peter Bragdon. Only two voices were heard opposing the bill from among the full Senate present.

The bill is now referred to Senate Finance Committee and will likely be heard next week (May 5th to May 9th). HB 1642 is a one-year emergency funding bill to provide for independent charter schools during 2008-2009. A new system for funding public education will be in place for 2009-2010.

Thursday, May 15, 2008, is the last day for the Senate toACT on all remaining House bills, such as House Bill 1642. Wednesday, May 21, 2008, is the last day to FORM Committees of Conference
