DELAWARE:

Charter School of Wilmington Delaware:

Started with a few hundred students in Wilming, a small city the size of Manchester, this new charter school for science and math now has 936 students grades 9-12 from different school districts. They have the highest course requirement for graduation, including a required 10 credits in math and science. Graduation requirements include a research project. This science/math high school has key corporate sponsors including Verizon, Hercules Incorporated, Christiana Care Health Systems, Conectiv, Astrazeneca who provide governance and program advice and philanthropy.

Accountability Ratings.

• Top – Scoring High School in the state on Delaware Math Assessments (1998-2004)
• Top – Scoring High School in the state on Delaware Science Assessments (2000-2004)
• Highest Average SAT scores in the state (among all public high schools)

MAINE:

Maine School of Science and Mathematics:

“The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is a public, residential high school whose main purpose is to offer a high-caliber education to Maine high school students. Across all subject areas, the academics are intended to provide students with topics of a high standard of interest and difficulty, taught by teachers having significant proficiency in their subjects.”
Established by act of the legislature.

INDIANA:

Indiana Academy of Science and Mathematics, and Humanities:

This two-year residential public high school is located at Ball State University’s campus in Muncie, Indiana. The Science/Math Academy serves 300 11th- and 12th-grade students. Funding is a line item in the college’s budget (the state’s per pupil cost for each student). One on-campus dorm provides residence for students who pay the residence fee. Students have access to the Ball State University campus, library, computer labs, wellness facilities and other programs.

VIRGINIA:

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology:

“Established in 1985, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is the result of a partnership of businesses and schools created to improve education in science, mathematics, and technology. As the Governor's School for Science and Technology in Northern Virginia, the school is also supported by the Virginia Department of Education.”

CALIFORNIA:

High Tech High:

“High Tech High began as a highly successful single charter school in San Diego, created by a coalition of education practitioners and business leaders. 100% of students have enrolled in college from the first two graduating classes. High Tech High is the first California charter school to operate its own teacher credentialing program. High Tech High’s success has led to nationwide recognition for replication and 8 replicated schools as of September of 2005.”

COLORODO:

Denver School of Science and Technology:

“Science & Tech was in part stimulated by the Governor of Colorado, Bill Owens. The goal was creating a public school placing Colorado in the forefront of science and math education. Hewlett Packard became a technology partner, ensuring that all students, regardless of family income, had access to the most sophisticated technology on the market. Forest City Enterprises donated 10 acres of land for the school.”

ILLINOIS:

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy:

“The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is an internationally-recognized pioneering educational institution created by the State of Illinois. Tuition and most room and board expenses are provided by state funds. The 650 students who are enrolled in the three-year residential program participate in a unique approach to learning that is problem-centered, inquiry-based and integrative. Advanced courses in mathematics, science, the arts and humanities emphasize connections across the disciplines.”
