Abstract: As a choice high school program, North Country
Charter Academy serves 45-60 students in two centers, divided into
morning and afternoon sessions and two classrooms per center (2
teachers, 15 students per teacher/session).
Once
the student is accepted and enrolled, an individualized learning
plan is developed. This ILP takes into consideration the student's
learning ability, needs, motivation, and competency goals.
After
one year of operation, NCCS will be a graduating 21 students, 9
had dropped out of school, going back to 2001. At mid-year
the average grade in math was 2.2 grade levels: vocabulary 1.02
grade levels: writing 1.4 grade levels. This is a serious academic
recovery school.
In
its second year, the results are even more impressive! The attendance
rate has increased from 89% to 91%. The Retention rate has increased
from 90% to 94%. In terms of students preparing to graduate, 21
graduated in the first year & 33 are on target to graduate in
year two.
In
Mathematics in year 1, students increased their skills an average
of 2.7 years grade levels. And at mid-point of the 2nd year, students
were up 2.01 grade levels (38 or 47 students tested at 4th grade
level in math upon entry). In vocabulary, students are up .86 grade
levels half way through the year; 23 or 47 students were at grade
level when they entered.
Students
have started community service. The Academy has adopted the 2nd
Battalion 6th Marine Unit. The students will be sending letters,
pictures and care packages over to Iraq.
The
charter school serves 26 school districts comprising of 9 school
Administrative units, covering 4,000 square miles. The North Country
Charter school is supported by the participating school districts
and Superintendent as well as local business.
The
North Country Charter School is a huge success and had over 150
applications for 2005-06. It is highly supported, is giving hope,
futures, self-esteem, higher achievement, and confidence to students
in the North Country.
