Our charter school served 46 students this year; 21 (46%) will receive their high school diploma in June. Of our 21 North Country Charter Academy graduates, 7 will attend post secondary education (33%), including four-year universities such as West Virginia State and the University of Hawaii. One Lancaster student will be attending Berlin Technical Community College for its Radiology program. Several students are investigating military careers.
One graduate, a wife and mother, will be attending Granite State College in September to pursue dual-degrees in Criminal Justice and Behavioral Science. She has been very involved in public speaking on behalf of the Academy as well as fund-raising for the graduation ceremony. She never thought she would graduate high school after dropping out in 2001. She applied to the Academy this year two weeks before her 22nd birthday, just making the age limit guideline. She set a high goal for herself, and now feels after accomplishing the task of graduating that she can accomplish anything. She will be speaking at the graduation ceremony and one of the most poignant lines in her speech is that she will never have to tell her daughter she did not earn her high school diploma.
Some graduates are going to continue working and will start higher education at a slower pace. The wonderful thing about our charter school graduates is how their attitudes have changed since beginning at this school. Most were very reluctant to believe they could perform at college level never mind be able to afford college. We were very fortunate to have faculty from Berlin Technical Community College come meet with our students. At a graduation planning meeting faculty from Granite State College (formerly CLL) came to address the students and their parents. To these students higher education is a reality now.
